Watermelon

Big, dark green, heavy, waiting to be cut!
Hot day, pesky flies all around.
Keep an eye out, could be any minute, don’t miss it,
The pop/crack of a knife piercing the big, juicy WATERMELON.
Mom and Dad are ready.
Kids are lined up, anticipation!
Flies are still around.
Pop/crack, smell the sweet, red meat of the WATERMELON!
Screendoor slamming,
Kids taking “their piece” outside.
Sweet, sticky juice running down chin, hands, arms.
Pesky flies still around—who cares it’s finally WATERMELON!
Big, toothy smiles all around.
Seeds spit here and there.
Dark, green rinds tossed to the chickens.
Oh, summer on the farm, big, dark, green, sweet, wonderful WATERMELON!
